EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS (ECP's)
Each year, millions of women have unprotected intercourse and are left, in the days that follow, with the fear of pregnancy and the feeling that nothing can be done. Emergency contraception gives these women a practical option to avoid pregnancy. Using one of the emergency contraceptive measures would reduce a woman's risk of pregnancy by at least 75%
Almost half (48%) of the six million pregnancies in the United States each year are unintended. About half of these unintended pregnancies occur because of some type of contraceptive failure - either a failure of the method or a mistake on the part of the user. The other half occur because no contraceptive was used at all. Among teenagers in the United States, four of every five pregnancies are unintended. One in five teens at risk of pregnancy uses no contraceptive.
Making emergency contraceptives available is the single most important step we can take to reduce unintended pregnancy and the need for induced abortion.
